Patrick Collins RHA (1911-1994) Mountain Lake Oil on board, 76 x 60cm (30 x 24'') Signed Born in Dromore West County Sligo, in 1910, Patrick Collins studied for a short time at the National College of Art & Design, under George Collie RHA, but is considered to have been largely self-taught. For much of the early half of his life, Collins worked in an insurance company, while painting part time. During this time, however, he represented Ireland at the Guggenheim Award Exhibition in 1958 and won the National Award. It was only in 1961 that Collins turned to painting full time. In 1980, Collins was elected an honorary member of the RHA, and in 1985 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Literature from Trinity College Dublin. He was also a member of Aosdana and was elected Saoi in 1987. The Arts Council of Ireland organised a retrospective exhibition of his work in 1982, and this travelled to the Crawford Gallery of Art, Cork, the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin and to the Ulster Museum in Belfast. In Dublin, his work can be seen in the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and elsewhere he is exhibited in the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery in Cork and the Ulster Museum, Belfast and many of his paintings are in private collections.
