Joseph Maunsel Hone (1882-1959) was a member of a long-established Dublin artistic and literary family, distantly related to the painters of the name. He was associated with the Maunsel publishing house, the Irish Bookshop and the Irish Academy of Letters, of which he was President. A writer and literary historian, he wrote several biographies including those of Berkeley and W.B. Yeats. His wife Vera was a favourite model for Orpen.
