Antique Kuba kilim, N.E. Azerbadjian, Ca 1865-1880 An early and highly representative example of this group of powerful Caucasian kilims. Finely woven with a strong handle, the pleasing colours all organic. Yanni Petsopoulos illustrates several closely related pieces in his important book Kilims, London 1979, plts 281, 286 & 287. Antique Senneh rug, Sanandaj (Senneh), Hamadan province, West Persia (Iran), Ca 1900 The refined rugs woven by the Kurds of Sanandaj have a unique structure and colouring, much finer than the village and tribal work found in the surrounding countryside. Jon Thompson illustrates a similar piece in the Barbican Art Gallery exhibition, London, 1983, p. 121, where he refers to the design as "Vekilli". This example has particularly attractive, all natural, colours. 190 x 134 cms, 6'3" x 4'5"

Antique Baluch rug, Khorassan province, N.E. Persia (Iran), Ca 1880-1900 A beautiful example of Baluch tribal weaving, showing how "primitive" nomadic weavers can create superb, perfectly balanced weavings with a brilliant range of warm, natural colours. What appears to be wear is natural corrosion in areas piled with brown/black wool, due to the presence of metallic acids in the dye mordants. Semi-antique Karadja rug, N.W. Persia (Iran), Ca 1900-1920 The village rugs from the Karadja area are similar to pieces from nearby Heriz but with a slightly different weave structure. Antique Karadja carpet, Karadja district, N.W. Persia (Iran), Ca 1890-1900 Karadja and Heriz produced carpets of similar style but can be distinguished by certain weave features; this example with a single blue cotton weft and "flat" Turkish knot is from the Karadja district. Old Kashan carpet, town of Kashan, Central Persia (Iran), Ca 1935-45. Green is a most unusual ground colour in any old carpet woven by islamic weavers, it being the holy colour associated with the holy profet Muhammed. In this old Kashan, the green dye has faded very slightly to a very agreable pistachio shade, working well with the warm and beuatifully drawn borders and scroll design. The wool quality and weaving technique is high with a knot count of around 185 pr square inch. 307 x 218 cms, 10'1"x7'2"

Semi-antique Ersari carpet, Amu Darya valley region, N.W. Afghanistan, Ca 1910-1925 Large Guls on open space inside narrow borders indicate good age in Afghani carpets. The soft ground colours were obtained by soaking the carpets in acidic mud which, when washed away, had absorbed excess dye to leave this pleasant, washed out appearance. This original form of "antique wash" was far less harmful than the viscious methods used in the modern carpet industry. 396 x 285 cms, 13' x 9'5" excl kilims

Semi-antique Karadja carpet, Karadja district, N.W. Persia (Iran), Ca 1910-1925. Antique Bidjar rug, Kurdish, Bidjar town, West Persia (Iran), Ca 1880-1900 Antique Bidjar rugs are rare and internationally sought after; they are also among the most robust of all Oriental rugs, due to a unique method of beating wool and cotton wefts into the fabric. The compact weave, dense knotting and good quality wool makes Bidjars exeptionally hard wearing. This piece, sourced from an old continental collection, is in virtually perfect condition with original ends, sidecords and full pile. Antique Heriz carpet, Heriz area, N.W. Persia (Iran), Ca 1870-1885. An early example with a rare, naturalistically drawn main border showing that the usual vine tendrils were in fact originally of zoo-morphic nature (eagle or snake heads). The entire design has an early, archaic drawing which confirms its considerable age. Further evidence lies in the uncluttered spaces in contrast to later weavings from Heriz. 387 x 312 cms, 12'9" x 10'3"
