Oil on canvas, unframed, 97 x 143cm
Boughton was born in Norwich Norfolk, England, the son of farmer William Boughton. The family emigrated to the United States in 1835, and he grew up in Albany, New York where he started his career as a self-taught artist. At this early stage he was influenced by the artists of the Hudson River School.
Boughton exhibited extensively in both Britain and USA, and was elected a member of the National Academy of Design in New York in 1871. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1879, and a Royal Academician (RA) in 1896. His subject matter largely included illustrations of American colonial history.
