A MASSIVE GREY JADE ‘DOUBLE PEACH’ SCROLL WEIGHT
China, Qing Dynasty, 17h-18th century
Massive, carved as two peaches of longevity hanging on a gnarled branch with leaves. The stone in grey, black and russet tones.
L: 12,5 cm – w: 9,3 cm
Weight: 808 grams
Provenance: An important collection of jade carvings, mostly Ming libation cups, properties from a French private collector, assembled over 20 years, pieces either bought privately or at public auction.
Note: The peach (tao 桃) signifies the second month of the lunar calendar. The peach also symbolizes marriage, spring, justice and especially Daoist immortality (longevity). It is also an homonym for ‘Longevity’ thereby conveying a wish for a long-lasting life.
