FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF OTTO GURGEN: A PROMINENT GERMAN ARGENTINIAN INDUSTRIALIST (BY REPUTE)

A PORCELAIN ‘LOTUS’ CUP
CHINA, QING DYNASTY
It rests on a short ring foot and has a round body with an everted rim. It is finely enamelled with lotus flowers and peonies. The palette of colours combined the underglaze cobalt blue, the yellow, the red, the pink as well as gilt. The base bears an apocryphal six-character mark of Emperor Kangxi in underglaze cobalt blue and kaishu script.
H: 4,4 cm - D: 7,6 cm

Provenance:
- a private collection;
- formerly the property of Otto Gürgen, a German prominent industrialist in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the 1930s (by repute).

Note: Because the Buddha is often depicted as seated on a lotus, the lotus is considered a sacred Buddhist symbol (one of Eight Auspicious Symbols) representing purity and detachment from worldly cares.

NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS

It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. In relation to Condition Reports, whilst we make certain observations on the lot, which are intended to be as helpful as possible, references in the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance. The absence of such a reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. The condition report is an expression of opinion only and must not be treated as a statement of fact. Measurements and weight are approximate and the potential bidder may re-ask it to be checked when asking for a condition report.
