VIETNAM, NGUYEN DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY
Resting on a short tapered foot, with a round body and a metal-mounted rim. finely painted in underglaze cobalt blue shades with five bats surrounding a ‘longevity’ (‘thọ’) character. the base is inscribed in underglaze cobalt blue with a four-character mark reading ‘Nhã Thâm Trân Tàng’ (‘若深珍藏’), lit. ‘Precious Collection of the Seemingly Old’. Also included in this lot is a ‘Fortress and boat’ bleu de hué porcelain bowl inscribed with a calligraphy, its base with an apocryphal four-character mark of Emperor Chenghua.

Notes: 
1. This mark is referenced in the book by Gerald Davison, ‘The New and reviser Handbook of Marks on Chinese Porcelain’, under number 1796. 
2. A very popular design found in many traditional houses consists of five bats surrounding the chinese character for ‘longevity’ (thọ 壽) which represents the expression ‘Wufu Giữ Tuổi Thọ’(‘五福捧寿’), lit. ‘Five Fortunes surround Longevity’. 
3. An identical bowl was sold at SOTHEBY’S Paris, France, 2010-10-16, lot 333.
