No. 18 The tinkers that Le Brocquy first encountered in 1945 near Tullamore became the artistic embodiment of this nascent artistic philosophy. Their independence, adaptability and strong sense of community drew him into their orbit. His many studies of their daily lives and environment became his commentary on the lives of so many others dispossessed by the war who would remain at the margins of life in Europe for the decades to come.
