Sarah Cecilia Harrison (1863-1941) Portrait of Colonel Maurice Moore, Senator Oil on canvas, 62 x 52cm (24.5 x 20.5'') Signed, monogram and initials, titled and dated 1930 Colonel Maurice Moore (1854-1939) was a younger brother of the writer George Moore, with whom he disagreed about most things. He fought in the Zulu War, and commanded a Connaught Rangers cavalry corps in the Boer War. He supported Home Rule for Ireland and became Inspector-General of the Irish volunteers. He took part in the Howth gun-running, but not in the Rising. In 1922 he persuaded the British authorities to free Connaught Rangers veterans who were imprisoned for their part in the so-called mutiny after the 1916 Rising. He campaigned against payment of Irish land annunities to Britain, became a founder of Fianna Fail and was elected a Free State Senator. He was basically a constitutional nationalist, though in the Parnellite rather than the Redmonite tradition, and it is fitting that this portrait was painted by a sister of Parnell's biographer Henry Harrison. A fine portrait in the grand manner, showing the old soldier in his 75th year, still keenly alert
