Cecil E. Cutler Portrait of John Watson (Master of the Meaths) Print, 49.5 x 33.5cm Signed and dated 1904 John Watson (1858-1908) took up the Meath Hounds in 1891 after Lord Fingall's resignation. The kennels were at Bective. An inspired huntsman, he took particular interest in the breeding of hounds and introduced structure from England and Ireland that made the Meath' a pre-eminent pack. He also was a noted polo player, founding the Freebooters who he took to America, winning the championship there. The 1895/96 season was held to be an absolute record. He died suddenly at Bective in November, 1908.
