1586 Constitutiones Fratrum Ordinis Beatissimae Dei Genitricis Mariae de Monte Carmeli Romæ: Apud Franciscum Zannettum: 1586. 4to. pp. [xl], 166, [2], 8, [4]. Contemporary full vellum. A very good copy. With an engraved vignette on the titlepage showing the Blessed Virgin Mary and Child Jesus and four other male figures including the Prophert Elijah; preface by Frater, Ioannes Baptista Cassardus de Senis. Carmelites or Order of the Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel originated in Palestine at the time of the Crusades and adopting en eremitical life style accepted a Rule provided for them circa 1213 by St Albert, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. A catchword at the bottom of page 166 indicates that the ensuing ''Regula'' is part of this book even though there is a separate titlepage, index, pagination and signatures. There is a drop title facing the contents page that reads ''Regula ex Sancti Basilii, & Joannis 44, Episcopi Ierosolymitani scriptis ab Alberto Patriarcha Ierosolymitano extracta, & Fratribus beatissimæ Dei genitricis, virginis Mariæ de Monte Carmeli data: ab Innocentio IIII. Confirmata, atque auctoritate eiusdem per Hugonem tituli sanctæ Sabinæ presbyte ru Cardinalem, & Guilhelmu Anteradensem Episcopum declarata, correcta, & mitigata.'' Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
