AN IRISH WILLIAM III CIRCULAR SILVER PATEN ON FOOT, Dublin circa 1700, probably mark of Joseph Walker (1690-22), with plain rims, dished sides and plain central reserve, raised on a circular spreading central foot. 12.5cm diameter, 3cm high The survival of this paten is significant especially within the context of Irish history at that time. The years leading to 1700, marked on-going conflict in Ireland with the ''War of Two Kings'' 1689-1691, the Jacobites Vs. the Williamites. The Jacobites were the supporters of the Catholic King James II, and the Williamites were the followers of the Protestant Prince, William of Orange (William III). William of Orange was victorious and won the three crowns of England, Scotland and Ireland. Under the rule of William III harsh laws were implemented against the Roman Catholics to forestall another rebellion. The eighteenth century opened with the Protestant gentry in control and many Catholic relics were destroyed. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
