George Campbell RHA RUA (1917-1979) Toledo No. 3 Oil on board, 34.5 x 45cm (13.5 x 17.75'') Signed, inscribed with title verso Exhibited: George Campbell Exhibition, David Hendriks Gallery, May 1974, where purchased by Charles Hennessy. This painting is pure rhythm; it swirls and dances. The work of a mature artist, it is unrestrained and immediate, bringing us close to the eye and the hand of Campbell. In using paint intuitively he was able to show up the sharp contrast between the harder, textured areas of natural rock and manmade stonework and the smoother areas of sky and water. You see pure love of Spain in this landscape of Toledo. He has given himself over totally to the Spain 'of the ethereal light and the mysterious nights; its introverted, extroverted people; its song and dance; its rugged and lace shapes and textures hard-wrought by thousands of years'. He never gives us a detailed rendition of Spain: he captures its essence'. S?le Connaughton-Deeny, November 2008
