DUBLIN Map of the County of Dublin 1821. By William Duncan Originally published in 8 sheets this copy has been dissected into sixty-four sheets (235 x 310 each) and mounted on linen and edged with red silk Outline colouring. Housed in an original maroon morocco slipcase with closure flap. Spine in calf with recent contrasting labels. Printed pink label of Hodges & Smith the well-known Dublin bookseller and publisher on inside of flap. With a large tables of distance in miles and furlongs, between each town, village and fair-place within the county. The measurements from Dublin commence at His Majesty's Castle Gate. The annexed small table shews the distance from the Castle to the Canal bridges and Circular road. Also a diagram of the Principal Triangles on which this map was founded. Below the dedication is a magnificent large vignette view looking north towards Howth from a position behind the Martello Tower at Sandycove, with the eastern arm of Dunlaoghaire harbour in the middle ground. Below this vignette is the legend: London, Engraved by S. I. Neele & Son, 352, Strand and Dublin, Published, 19, July, 1821, by Willy Duncan, 34 Charlemont. Scale in Irish and English miles. Some minor foxing and a few small ink splashes. Exceedingly rare. Bonar Law Co 13. Copac lists only 1 copy.Grand Juries, the forerunners of today's local authorities, needed maps for administrative and for planning purposes. In 1814, William Duncan was commissioned to produce a series of maps of Dublin County for the use of the Dublin Grand Jury. His map was dedicated to His Royal Highness Field Marshal the Duke of York. As surveyed, laid down and drawn by William Duncan, Principal draftsmam.
