Sir John French, Lord Lieutenant. A Proclamation dated 3 June 1918, asking that Ireland should 'voluntarily furnish the number of men required [by the British armed forces] to establish an equitable ratio when compared with all other parts of the Empire', viz. 50,000 recruits before October 1 to replenish the Irish Divisions in the field, and after that date 2,000 to 3,000 recruits per month. Broadside poster, issued by Edward Shortt [Chief Secretary], circa 34 1/2 ins x 22 1/4 ins, framed. * French's proposal was that conscription would not be applied in Ireland if the specified numbers of volunteers came forward. In the event, they did not come forward, but Sinn Fein mobilized support against conscription and it did not proceed.
