1641 Instituta Congregationis Oratorii S. Mariæ in Vallicella de Urbe A.S. Philippo Nerio Fundatæ. Printed by Typis Mascardi, Rome. Small 8vo with a title page vignette of St Philip Neri (died 1595). The Congregation of the Oratory, best known in these Islands for the Brompton Oratory in Kensington, was founded by St Philip. It grew out of a community of priests that gathered around the saint and in 1612 their Constitutions were sanctioned by Pope Paul V. In 1641 Fr Paolo Scarpi one of the Oratorians - they also provided the origins for the term ''oratorio'' a choral musical setting of a religious libretto - was sent to Ireland as the original papal envoy to the Confederation of Kilkenny. Marble boards preserved in a green quarter morocco case with red label up the spine. Condition good save for a paper flaw at foot of A7 not affecting the text. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
