(4) John Devoy and Judge Daniel Cohalan were leading figures in the Friends of Irish Freedom organisation. The aim of the organisation was to foster 'any movement that will tend to bring about the National Independence of Ireland'. Diarmuid Lynch (1878-1950) was born at Tracton, County Cork, and spent much of his early life in America. Through his membership of the IRB he had come into contact with John Devoy. He was appointed National Secretary of the F.O.I.F. at the Second Irish Race Convention in May 1918. Thanks, in no small part, to Lynch's organisational ability membership of the F.O.I.F. rapidly rose to 50,000, a three-fold increase in six months.
