H., J. A remonstrance of the present state of things in and about the City and Parliament, since the King and Queenes departure to Hampton Court - London: January 18th 1641 [42]: 4to. pp. [8]. A fair copy in modern quarter morocco. Wing H 79. Very rare. The significance of this pamphlet, much more easily found in libraries in America than Europe, lies in the description of an Irish gunpowder plot even if the details are much exaggerated: “The rebels in Ireland, for bringing their bloody and hellish designes to perfection had provided shovels, spades, pick-acks, and many other instruments for the said bloody designe and about the number of 400 souldiers, and there with all speed they set them to work, which was to undermine the ground for the space of two miles, and layd there great store of gunpowder and so by that meanes to blow up the aforenamed lords in their marching over. The credit for uncovering the plot is credited to Colonel Morton who was within six miles of Dublin when he felt “the ground quiver under his feet”.
