Julius Olsson RA RBA PROI RWA NEAC (1864-1942) Lighthouse at Moonlight Oil on board, 43 x 33cm (16.75 x 13'') Signed Julius Olsson, a marine and landscape painter, born in London in 1864 of a Swedish father and an English mother. Olsson studied in London and elsewhere. He first exhibited with the Royal Academy in 1890, and in the same year settled in St. Ives. He became a member of the N.E.A.C. (New English Art Club) in 1891. Like other artists who exhibited with the N.E.A.C., Olsson was influenced by the Impressionists. This is evident when we look at his ability to capture, in this transient seascape, the bright splashes of dancing light emanating from the moonlight swimming on the waves, which are climbing up the rocks. He painted many seascapes in Cornwall, the Channel Islands and also in Ireland. He served as a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve from 1914-18; P.R.O.I. 1919. Olsson died in 1942 in Dalkey, Co. Dublin.
