A prolific watercolour painter of military uniforms and parades, with a very distinctive style, he can be considered with Orlando Norrie, as one of the two best late Victorian artist who specialised in recording their country's military strength. He also painted recruiting posters and illustration for the 'Army and Navy Gazette', and published a number of related books viz. Boys Book of British Battles 1889, Our Armies 1891, and Where Glory Calls 1893 etc.
