CIRCLE OF WILLEM VAN DER HAGEN A river landscape with classical ruins and numerous figures and animals Oil on canvas, 107 x 145cm Signed with a monogram and dated In period carved gadrooned gilt-wood frame Provenance: Carrigglas Manor, Co. Longford Note: this picture compares very closely to that by Van der Hagen offered by The Cynthia O'Connor Gallery for the Irish Antique Dealers Fair, 1994. However a problem arises due to a post-mortem date incorporated in the monogram which is obviously authentic. A suggestion arrived is that there was a younger generation of Van der Hagens, also stage set painters, who produced pastiches of their father's works and indeed the present lot may stimulate reattribution of works currently given to Van der Hagen senior.
