A LARGE IRISH VICTORIAN MAHOGANY CASE CONTAINING A STUFFED TROUT AND TWIN KINGFISHERS, the case bearing the label 'This trout was caught/on the lakes of Killarney/on Friday 23rd March/1863 by one of the most/accomplished/fishermen/in England/W.P./Sailsbury Lodge/Clifton', William Philips. 102cm wide x 22cm deep

 

One, two, three, four, five, once I caught a fish alive

From the 18th century, Killarney began to emerge as a popular tourist destination. Its beautiful landscape and rich lakes attracted those wishing to engage in outdoor pursuits, with the well stocked lakes being a haven for fishermen. Tourism only increased as the industrial revolution stretched her steely fingers across the Irish Sea and brought railways to rural Ireland, with Killarney being granted one in 1853. Two years later, on Friday, 23rd March, this tourism marked the end for a particular brown trout as he made his way through the murky lake waters. His great size was his downfall as, in true sporting bravado, he was claimed as a trophy and caged in his glassy pool for an eternity of admiration.
