Hatch Street garden dates to 1951 and forms part of an interesting body of early work created in Swift's studio on Hatch Street, Dublin. Swift was part of an influential Dublin cultural set that included Anthony Cronin, Patrick Kavanagh, Nano Reid and Brendan Behan among others. About this time Swift met Claire McAllister, a student in trinity College and they moved into a large flat in a Georgian house on Hatch Street with Swift subletting the front half to the painter Patrick Pye as a studio. Their relationship came to an end after swift was introduced to the beautiful Oonagh Ryan in May 1952 and later that year Swift left Claire and followed Oonagh to London.
