Harry Clarke RHA (1889-1931) A Meeting (1918) Watercolour, 30 x 19.5cm (11.75 x 7.75'') Inscribed ''The Mermaid, Heinrich Heine, Miss French's panel.'' Provenance: The artists family by descent. Bought by the present owner at the Frederick Gallery Exhibition, September 2000. Exhibited: Harry Clarke Retrospective, TCD, November 1979, catalogue no. 154. David Clarke and Family Reprospective, The Frederick Gallery, Dublin, September 2000, catalogue no. 71. Literature: Nicola Gordon-Bowe, 1979, Harry Clarke Retrospective, exhibition catalogue. This is a preparatory drawing for a stained glass panel commissioned by Jane French, Hon. Treasurer of the Arts and Crafts Society of Ireland. She had previously had a heraldic panel made for her in 1914. Plans for the panel began in 1917 and this cartoon was executed on 5th June, 1918. The panel was made to hang in Miss French's house at 15 Lower Pembroke Street, Dublin. The study illustrates Heinrich Heine's haunting ballad, A Meeting, and the completed panel adhered very much to this original conception. Clarke has illustrated the part of the poem when an unknown couple meet at a gypsy dance discovering each other to be merman and mermaid.
