SOMERVILLE, EDITH OENONE
An unpublished original sketch by Edith Somerville, illustration for her classic work 'Some Adventures of an Irish R.M.', pencil on paper mounted on card, signed with initials, showing the cook (Mrs. Cadogan) holding forth, with inscription in the artist's hand, "A horse! a horse! Is that my darlin' Major Yeates?", said the cook, also signed, addressed and captioned on verso. 285 x 190mm.
Not found in the published work, 1899, where there appears to be no portrait of Mrs. Cadogan, though it may have been used in the Badminton Magazine, where the stories first appeared. An attractive item from an underrated and influential work, which portrays the lives of the minor Anglo-Irish gentry with 'a smile and a tear'
