A PAIR OF BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘STAG AND DEER’ PHOENIX-TAIL VASES, FENGWEIZUN
CHINA, LATE QING DYNASTY TO REPUBLIC / MINGUO PERIOD
The lower part of the body, of baluster shape, is surmounted by a trumpet neck. The body is painted in underglaze cobalt blue enamels with a continuous rivershore landscape with a couple of passing deer and stag as well as a flying crane amidst clouds. The neck is also painted with a continuous rivershore landscape with one single passing stag as well as a flying crane. The base bears a double circle in underglaze cobalt blue.
H: 38 cm

Note: The Chinese believe the deer lives to a very great age and, as a result, has become a symbol for long life. The deer is traditionally believed to be the only animal able to find the magical lingzhi fungus of immortality.

NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS

It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. In relation to Condition Reports, whilst we make certain observations on the lot, which are intended to be as helpful as possible, references in the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance. The absence of such a reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. The condition report is an expression of opinion only and must not be treated as a statement of fact. Measurements and weight are approximate and the potential bidder may re-ask it to be checked when asking for a condition report.
