A SILVER-MOUNTED AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE MODIFIED AS A FRICTION LIGHTER
THE SNUFF BOTTLE: CHINA, LATE QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY
THE MOUNT: MAISON MAQUET, PARIS & NICE, CIRCA 1900
The agate snuff bottle with a flatted egg-shaped body and with brown inclusions is carved in lower relief with a fan and a woven pattern. It has been silver-mounted on a spread foot chiseled with flowers. The rim is also lined with silver and it is combined with a silver stopper embellished with stones. The rim bears the mark ‘Maquet’.
