A photographic print of Maggie Dirrane (born Maggie Tom Ní Mhaoláin, 1899-1995), an actress most noted for her role in the documentary film ‘Man of Aran’. Released in 1934, ‘Man of Aran’ was directed by Robert J. Flaherty and explored harsh reality of everyday life on the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. This photo was taken in the ‘Man of Aran’ cottage by William MacQuitty on a visit to the island in 1938 when he and his party stayed at the cottage with the artist Elizabeth Rivers. Maggie Dirrane helped Elizabeth Rivers run the house.

William MacQuitty was a Northern Irish writer, photographer and film producer best remembered for making the 1958 classic movie ‘A Night to Remember’ about the sinking of the RMS Titanic. A year later he was one of the founders of UTV becoming its first managing director.
