CAPEL, Arthur, 1st Earl of Essex. By the Lord Lieutenant and Council. Rules orders and directions made and establish’d for the better regulating of all such Cities, Walled-Towns and Corporations within this Kingdom of Ireland - Dublin: Printed by Benjamin Tooke … And are to be sold by Joseph Wilde, Bookseller in Castle-street, 1672. Folio. pp. 15. A very good in modern quarter calf. Wing I 647A. Steele (Ire) 828. Dated September 16th. The explanation for the haste with which these corporation rules were carried through is to be found in the preamble quoting from the “Act for the explaining of some doubts arising upon an Act; entituled, an Act for the better execution of His Majesties gracious declaration for the Settlement of the Kingdom of Ireland .... It is amongst other things enacted, that it shall, and may be lawful to, and for the Lord Lieutenant, or other Chief Governor, or Governors, and Council of Ireland .... during the space of seven years to be accompted from the nine and twentieth day of September, one thousand six hundred sixty five, to make and establish such rules, orders, and directions, for the better regulating of all cities, walled towns and corporations.” Sweeney 3881. Provenance: This and the following five entries were acquired by us at an auction in Christ Church to raise funds for restoration work. This copy with the Christ Church stamp on the titlepage.
