An important pair of Irish harewood, satinwood, rosewood banded and marquetry side tables, c.1785 and probably by William Moore of Dublin. The finely inlaid tops centred by half paterae within venus pearl banded borders of floral interlace hung with bunches of grapes and centred alternately by classical portrait medallions and rosettes, the panelled frieze with swagged rosettes each on four canted square tapering legs, headed by oval paterae and with pendants of entwined laurel, the raised bandings with quatrefoil motif. each 137cm wide, 58cm deep, 87cm high Possibly from a family of Dublin cabinet makers, Moore came to the attention of the Dublin Society in 1778 and had probably attended their school of Landscape and Ornament Drawing. He certainly worked for Mayhew and Ince, the pre-eminent London cabinet makers of the neo-calssical movement and whose style Moore adopted for the rest of his career. He was established in Dublin by 1774 and identification of his work derives from the superb and documented cabinet supplied to the Duke of Portland as Lord Lieutenant. His output seems to have been large but as The Knight of Glin and Peill point out other Dublin cabinet makers took up the refined neo-classical style. The classical portrait medallions on the present tables will surely repay future referral and confirm the authorship of these magnificent and elegant tables
