A Victorian mahogany framed library armchair, the padded back, seat and armrests covered in worn tan hide, with scroll armresr terminals and raised on turned front legs. A silver (Dublin 1837) plaque attached to the back reads- ''DESK CHAIR of JOHN REDMOND M.P. Aughavanagh Co. Wicklow'' Provenance: The Kinlen Collection, Dublin - given by John Redmond to Tom O'Donnell M.P. - Father in law of Louis Kinlen, thence by descent. John Edward Redmond (1856-1918) was born in Ballytrent, Co. Wexford, the eldest son of William Redmond M.P. for Wexford. John was called to the Irish bar in 1886 having been elected MP. for New Ross in 1881. He continued to support Parnell after the 1890 split due to the O'Shea divorce case and in 1891 was elected Parnellite member to Waterford, a seat he held until his death in 1918. Thomas O'Donnell (1871-1943) was M.P. for West Kerry between 1900-1918 and was a staunch supporter of John Redmond and his Home Rule Act. O'Donnell was seen as one of the Irish party's rising stars and was considered a possible member of a Home Rule government. He also strongly supported John Redmond's Irish Volunteers and promoted recruitment for Irish Regiments during the Great War. O'Donnell was called to the King's Inns Bar as barrister in 1905 and was called to the inner bar in 1932, being appointed judge to the Circuit Court for Counties Clare, Kerry and Limerick in 1941. His daughter Aileen married building contractor Louis Kinlen and lived at Darwin Hall in Rathfarnham, Dublin. Their eldest son Dermot Kinlen S.C. who died recently was a judge and Inspector of Prisons and this chair was in use in the library at his home on the Merrion Road until his death.
