Patrick Vincent Duffy RHA (1836-1909) Lake Scene Connemara (1883) Oil on canvas, 71 x 112cm (28 x 44'') Signed Exhibited: Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition, 1883, cat. no. 43. Born in Dublin in 1832, Patrick Vincent Duffy received his art education at the schools of the Royal Dublin Society from 1847. He began to exhibit at the RHA in 1851, while still a student, when he sent in an ''Exterior of St. Patricks''. In 1860 he was elected an Associate of the Academy, and several months later became a full member. He became an important figure at the Academy, being appointed Keeper in 1870, a position he held until his death, some thirty-eight years later. Duffy confined his art entirely to landscapes, although he had dabbled in some sculpture as a young man. His landscapes were exhibited regularly at the Royal Hibernian Academy throughout his life, and he also exhibited one at the Royal Academy of London. His work can be seen today at the National Gallery of Ireland.
