TOM CLARKE A fine and important carved oak Freedom Box with a silver plaque reading 'Freedom of the City of Limerick. Presented by the Mayor and Borough Council to Thomas J. Clarke, Ex-Political Prisoner, 2nd March 1899'. With a separate plaque stating 'This Casket is made of Oak taken from the Roof of St. Many's Cathedral, Limerick, built 1172. John Daly, Mayor. T.H. Cleeve, J.P. City High Sheriff. W.M. Nolan, Town Clerk.' All the panels finely carved with motifs including shamrocks, a harp, the front of King John's Castle, a plinth, interlocked Celtic serpents, a coat of arms with words 'Lamh Dearg Erin', etc., edges with ribbon carving; interior lined with green and purple velvet. 6 3/4 x 5 1/2 x 6 1/4 ins.
