JAMES STEPHENS (1824-1901) A large framed portrait photograph of Stephens in a cloak, half length, circa 1880, inscribed at top 'Yours faithfully & fraternally, James Stephens'. 11 x 9 ins (28 x 23 cms), frame with some damage. * Stephens, born in Kilkenny, was aide-de-camp to William Smith O'Brien in the skirmish at Ballingarry in 1848. In the early 1860s he was a founder and organiser of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, popularly known as the Fenians. He planned an insurrection with American aid in 1865, but lost his chance through delay - a lesson which was not lost on Tom Clarke.
