WATERCOLOUR CARICATURE PORTRAIT OF AN OFFICER OF THE 5TH ROYAL IRISH LANCERS. Full length, standing facing left and wearing the full dress uniform of an officer of the 5th Royal Irish Lancers, by H.D. Harris, signed and dated 31.10.(19)47. Mounted on card, 6'' x 15'' (15 x 38cm) approx. The 5th Royal Irish Lancers were amalgamated with the 16th Lancers as part of the post WW1 military reductions and amalgamations. Although this caricature is dated 1947, it is actually of an officer of the pre-1922 5th Lancers, since he is depicted wearing a 5th Lancers Maid of Erin collar badge. After amalgamation the combined 16th and 5th Lancers wore the collar badge of the senior regiment in the amalgamation, the16th Lancers, crossed lances with the regimental number ''16'' superimposed. The artist is believed to have been a relative (father/brother?) of Ron Harris, who put together the finest archive of photographs and pictures of the officers and men of the British and Indian armies ever assembled, the Ron Harris Archive.
