KEVIN BARRY INTEREST, 1ST BATTALION LANCASHIRE FUSILIERS SOUVENIR PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM. Comprising 23 printed sepia photographs of various officers and men of the regiment, etc, including the regiment's commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel de Putron, group photographs of the officers, sergeants, corporals, band, signallers, machine-gun section, and the battalion's various companies, etc, decorative card cover, by Gale & Polden, circa 1919, produced shortly before the battalion sailed to Ireland to fight in the Irish War of Independence. The 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers embarked for Ireland on 28th March 1920 and remained in Dublin until 15th December 1922, continuously engaged on escort duties, patrols and raids, and was involved in many of the more important events of the period. By the time the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers landed in Dublin they were a battle hardened unit, having seen almost four years continuous fighting at Gallipoli and the western front. The ranks of the regiment contained many officers and men who had been decorated for bravery, and were typical of the stiff opposition that the Irish Volunteers faced during the War of Independence. Officers and men of the battalion took part in the capture and identification of Kevin Barry, and two officers of the regiment, Lieutenant-Colonel Woodcock D.S.O. and Captain Keenlyside, M.C., were killed during Michael Collins's Bloody Sunday attacks of 21st November 1920.
