Un-Recorded Fianna Eireann Flag A linen handmade Fianna Eireann flag with a yellow painted sunburst at left with a Celtic cross motif at its centre, and the words FIANNA / EIREANN in black hand-drawn Gaelic letters, 43 ½ x 27 ins, flagstaff ties at left, margins stitched, minor stains but generally in excellent condition, evidently made for parade use, possibly 1920s or early l930s. Not recorded by Hayes McCoy. An extremely rare flag. From the collection of Seán ó hEideain, accompanied by his commission as Captain in the FCA, 6 December 1946, signed by Sean T. O Ceallaigh (President), countersigned by Eamon de Valera (Taoiseach) and Oscar Mac Treinfhir (Traylor), Minister for Defence. * Fianna Eireann was founded by Countess Markievicz and others circa 1909, to provide a national alternative to the Baden Powell scouting movement and to encourage outdoor pursuits among Irish youth. Fianna detachments took part in the Howth gunrunning and the 1916 Rising; the organisation continued to operate after independence. The sunburst motif was widely used by the Fenians and connected organisations. (1)
