Co. Limerick First British Plane 'bagged' by Irish Troops The Intelligence War - Ireland, 1920 - 21: A folder containing: a. A copy of Major. Gen. Strickland's cyclostyled Weekly Intelligence Summary dated 17.5.21, circa 30pp, with many interesting comments on British military activities, the state of various I.R.A. units, etc. Recovered from the plane 'bagged' by Irish troops, with some damage affecting lower portion of most pages as a result of plane going up in flames. Full account in Limericks ''Fighting Story''. b. A typescript note from Maj. J.M. Mac Carthy (I.R.A.) stating the first document is a copy captured by the I.R.A., and of considerable value to them in spite of its 'wildly inaccurate comments on some issues;' c. A five page manuscript comment on the 'captured document' unsigned but probably by Maj. Mc Carthy; d. A letter from a researcher to Col. Mc Carthy about the capture of a British aeroplane by the I.R.A., February 1921; another letter from E.B. Murphy of Independent Newspapers on same subject. e. A photocopy and a typescript copy of a statement by the pilot of the captured aeroplane, stating he was well treated while in I.R.A. custody; f. Other items related, interesting press cuttings etc. As a collection, w.a.f. An interesting Archive on one of the lesser known during the war with the Black-and-Tans. Provenance: By direct descent from Family of Sean Mac Carthaigh O.C. East Limerick Brigade.
