Antique Heriz carpet, Heriz area, N.W. Persia (Iran), Ca 1870-1885. An early example with a rare, naturalistically drawn main border showing that the usual vine tendrils were in fact originally of zoo-morphic nature (eagle or snake heads). The entire design has an early, archaic drawing which confirms its considerable age. Further evidence lies in the uncluttered spaces in contrast to later weavings from Heriz. 387 x 312 cms, 12'9'' x 10'3''
