Tom Carr HRHA RUA (1909-1999) Lunch on the Prom Oil on panel, 21.6 x 25.4cm (8.5 x 10'') Signed Exhibited: Thomas Agnew and Sons Ltd London, Jan/Feb 1950, Cat. No. 20 (Label verso) After studying at the Slade, Carr lived for six months in Italy. In 1933 he first exhibited in London with the 'Objective Abstractionist' Group alongside Victor Pasmore and Ceri Richards. Later, he became associated with the Euston Road Group. Other exhibition venues included: New English Art Club, Royal Academy, Redfern Gallery, Leicester and Wildenstein Galleries. In 1938 he returned permanently to Belfast, spending much of his painting time in the Newcastle area. Carr held solo shows in Belfast at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and in Dublin at the David Hendricks Gallery. His work has also been hung in the Oireachtas and the RHA. An Academician of the Royal Ulster Academy, he won the Gold Medal in 1973 and the Conor Award in 1976 - the same year he won the Oireachtas Award in Dublin for landscape.
