Louis le Brocquy (b.1916) Men of Connaught 1973 Wool tapestry, 180 x 233 cm (70.8 x 91.7'') Woven by Tabard Fr?res and Soeurs, Aubusson Signed and numbered 1/9 on label verso Exhibited: Louis le Brocquy Exhibition, The Dawson Gallery, Dublin, 1973 Louis le Brocquy Exhibition, McClelland International Gallery, Belfast 1973 Literature: Louis le Brocquy, Dorothy Walker, full page illustration, figure 146 page 144 Following the large T?in tapestry Le Brocquy did for P.J. Carroll & Co now in the collection of IMMA Le Brocquy designed 6 smaller T?in tapestries one of which was ''Men of Connacht'' described by Dorothy Walker in her monograph on the artist as ''composed of black heads casting a grey shadow behind them, achieves an effect like the traditional ''Lace'' stone walls of Connemara. It recalls the legend of a King who shared the celtic identification of the stone boss with the head,to the extent of attacking a stone wall under the illusion (admittedly cast by a spell) that he was dealing with upstanding warriors. All of the T?in tapestries were woven in Aubusson and in them the artist has contrived a masterly conjunction between the narrative content of the epic, his own and the ancient Celtic concern of the head image and visual and architectural demands of a large modern wall hanging.''
