Dublin born, Lily Williams was first taught by May Manning and later went on to the Metropolitan School of Art, where her contemporaries included Estella Solomons, Beatric Glenavy and Cissie Beckett. Well known for her Republican sympathies she fell out with her family at the time of the Rising. Her portrait of Arthur Griffith is in the Hugh Lane Gallery collection.
