Swiss painter Hans Iten was born in Zurich in 1874, he studied painting and drawing at the School of Art, St. Gall. After a period of time working in Paris, Iten moved to Belfast in 1904 to work as a damask designer with linen manufacturers McCrum, Watson and Mercer Ltd. He was a member of the Belfast Art Society, vice-president of the Ulster Arts Club and one of the first nine academicians elected to the Ulster Academy in 1930.
