Evie Hone, (1894-1955) Saints and Scholars with Saint Colmcille Gouache, 80 x 32cms, (31.5 x 12.5'') Provenance: From the Collection of Dr. Eileen MacCarvill and thence by descent. Original exhibition label verso. Exhibitied: Irish Exhibition of Living Art 1955 Memorial Section to Evie Hone Cat. No. 141. Evie Hone Retrospective The Great Hall, Universtiy College Earlsfort Terrace, July-September 1958 Cat. No. 49 In 1937 the Irish Government commissioned Evie Hone to design a stained glass window for The Irish pavillion for the 1938 New York World Fair. In the end the government chose ''My Four Green Fields'' where the arms of the four provinces of Ireland are intertwined with what is otherwise a purely abstract design. After laying for many years in gates at The Royal Hospital this window now has pride of place at the top of the main staircase of Government Buildings. It is interesting that the government of the time went for such a modern design rather than this alternative design for the Irish Pavillion which is much more typical of Evie's work both symbolically and colourwise.
