Gavin Hogg (b.1965) Light Shaft Oil and wax on canvas, 40 x 40cm Signed, inscribed and dated 2006 verso Note: This painting is a homage to the French painter Seurat, very much in the tradition of late 19th and early 20th century French painting where colour and the use of rhythmic pattern are a central feature. These then avant-garde but now quite traditional painting languages are married with a more personal iconography of the maze and the wallpaper like flower pattern. Ideas of how the human eye perceives light and shadow and the play between representational painting space and abstract painting space are the other main elements within this work. Gavin Hogg carries a very impressive CV with his name. After having completed a Diploma in Fine Art (focusing on painting) from the Limerick School of Art and Design in 1987 he furthered his artistic training with an M.A., also in Fine Art, from the Birmingham Institute of Art. His work is housed in many collections throughout Ireland and abroad including: Arts Council Collection, Dublin; Murray O'Laoire Architects, Limerick; New York Public Library, New York; Office of Public Works, Dublin; RTE, Limerick and the Hunt Museum, Limerick. Gavin Hogg has been chosen for a number of awards throughout his career as a painter, many of these awards coming from the Arts Council of Ireland.
