MAURICE PRIMROSE
A view of Pontoon with lakes Conn and Cullen, Nephin in the background
Inscribed and dated June 24/49, and
The Pattern at Pontoon, Co. Mayo June 24/49
A pair, each 245 x 345mm

Primrose, an army officer, made a tour of Ireland just after the famine. These two views made on the same day record a part of his trip. The pattern which he stumbled upon gives a spontaneous view of the gathering at what is now Healys Hotel and with Lord Lucans lodge (and barracks to guard him). It is a very valuable and objective study of the social conditions prevailing at a precise date in County Mayo.
