Benjamin West (1738 - 1820) was an American born painter who after his move to London at 25 established himself as an a key figure in artistic milieu of England. He was the one of the founding members of the Royal Academy and became the second president. West quickly established friendships with a number of influential Londoners and secured the patronage of the Archbishop of York who in turn introduced him to King George III who made him his historical painter 1772.
