William Crampton Gore, RHA (1877 - 1946) The artist's daughter playing the piano (1929-1930) Oil on canvas, 49 x 59cm (19 x 23'') Provenance: The artist's family Note: Painted at the artsit's home at Montreuil Sur Mer, in France about 1929-30, it depicts the artist's daughter, Elizabeth, playing the piano to her teddy bear. Born in October 1871 Crampton Gores family home was in Enniskerry. Gore originally studied medicine and he graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1897 and practiced as a doctor until 1901 when he gave it all up for painting. He originally studied at the Slade under Henry Tonles in 1898 enrolling full time there in 1900 where he spent the next five years studying as well as taking lessons in Paris. During his student days he was friendly with William Orpen and they shared together at 21 Fitzroy Street. Orpen included Gore as the figure of the doctor in his well-known picture ''A Mere Fracture'' (1901) which was set in Fitzroy Street - this picture was sold in Christies in 1998. Crampton Gore kept up his connections with Ireland and he exhibited at The Royal Hibernian Academy from 1905 and from then until 1939 he contributed more than one hundred works. From the titles exhibited over the years ''Achill Interior'' (1914), ''The Great Beeches at Wingfield'' (1925), ''Killiney Bay'' (1926), ''A Cottage Interior in Donegal'' (1931). Gore obviously made many painting trips back to Ireland. On his marriage in France 1923 he settled in Montreuil-Sur-Mer in the South of France. He was related to Dernod O'Brien PRHA who stayed and painted with him on many occasions. This work is set in his home at forty-four Rue du G?n?ral Potez, Montreuil-Sur-Mer circa 1929 and depicts his daughter, Elizabeth, playing the piano to her favourite teddy bear. It is considered by many to be one of his finest works and has remained in family ownership until now.
