Nathaniel Hone, RHA, (1831-1917) Herdsman and Cows on a Country Road, Glemalure, Co. Wicklow Oil on canvas, 61.5 zx 102.2cm, (24.25 x 40.25'') Provenance: Collection of John Quinn, New York; American Art Galleries, New York, 1927, No. 240. Exhibited: Probably Dublin RHA 1880 No. 51 entitled ''Misty Evening, Glenmalure''; Dublin, Jack B. Yeats and Nathaniel Hone 1901. Literature: F. Watson, John Quinn (1870-1925), Collection of Paintings, Watercolours, Drawings & Sculpture, New York, 1926 p.17. The American Collector, John Quinn is probably best known in Ireland as the friend of the Yeats family. He amassed a large collection of Irish, British and French pictures, mostly purchased directly from the artists themselves. So vast was his collection that the sale took place over four days at the American Art Gallereis in New York. This work sold on 10th February 1927, lot 240 for $100 to Sullivan. John Quinn owned a total of seventeen works by Nathaniel Hone.
