Norah McGuinness HRHA (1901-1980) Tug Boats New York Gouache, 37 x 50 cm (14.6 x 19.7'') Signed and dated '37 Padraig Colum in the introduction of Norah McGuinness's 1939 Show at the Paul Reinhardt Gallery, New York writes ''no painter can be more visual than Norah McGuinness: what she renders is what has been seen clearly and steadily. And she gives us both mass and movement. It seems to me that while other painters have given us the towering diversity of structures that is New York, Norah McGuinness alone has given us movement to go with the structures. Her New York buildings stand steeply, monumentally, but always beside them there is something to express New York's movement - the flow of of water, a motion in the skies, the motion of boats, the winging of Gulls. The exquisite colour that is New York's also has been rendered by her.''
